Routine is wonderful. We all love the constancy of routine. Especially if profits are good and feedback positive. But what if routine is your worst enemy. India just lost the Cricket test to Australia 4-0 because of routine. Roger Federer just got wiped out of the Australian Open tennis because of routine and President Obama might have made a real strategic mistake in his career because of routine.

The Calm Before The Storm
Routine in nature is called "the calm before the storm" We all know it when it comes to weather. You feel that eerie stillness and yet, somewhere in the back of your mind you know it's just a precursor for something turbulent.
When the world trade centre was attacked in 2001 the FBI and the CIA knew of a plot to do something bad. They followed routine, protocol and the event took place right under their noses. All this, and business troubles, relationship troubles and health troubles could have been and could be avoided if routine was broken, deliberately rather than accidentally.
Nature, and therefore we, evolve at the border of chaos and order. Order is routine, chaos for most is the unexpected.
A think tank or brain storming session conducted by an antagonistic and provocative facilitator stirs people's emotions, get's them polarised, challenges comfort zones and makes routine feel threatened. And would you believe, although people complain that they would prefer something to further anchor their routine, the benefits are huge.
Deep in our subconscious mind, we know that with calm there's a storm and that nervous anticipation makes some people highly resistant, fearful and aggressively resistant. SOme leaders lack the courage to bring on a brain storm or think tank and their teams pay for it in boredom, long term lost interest and restlessness which inevitably leads to self sabotage.
All my training programs are think tanks... they are designed to make people think. Some refuse and as the sun sets in the west, they are seen, wrapped in their armour going about their work and relationship in the same way they did ten years ago. Ten years without interest, without appreciation in value.. imagine if your money didn't grow, you'd be furious at zero interest. So, how is it that we tolerate it in human behaviour and leadership performance?
