Complexity is defined as imbalanced thinking. The more complex the situation the less balance we see. As the world is becoming more complex the need for a different way of seeing things is increasing. Finding balance is the key. This contradicts most conventional thought process often and is highly resisted by individuals whose ambition it is to seek adrenaline hype through every decision they make. Understand the Order in the Chaos - The definition of complexity is chaos and yet there is order in that chaos. To make complexity transparent we need to understand the laws that underpin the order of things. Many people have tried to invent these laws and claimed Holly intervention but these laws are not the laws that make chaos transparent. They are preventative laws. Universal laws are not preventative laws they are explanatory. This is why we utilise the universal laws of nature in turning chaos to order.


Tap Into Creative Options - Complexity creates a multitude of options. Sifting through these options and trying to work out which are the best and which to throw away is incredibly stressful. When an individual is thinking short-term certain options look profound. However, when that individual looks at the situation in the long-term those same options look profane. Creative options can only be measured against the criteria that is sustainable with a mix of both short-term benefit and long-term outcome.

In our research studying thousands of CEOs the most common approach to simplifying and mastering complexity is to worry, work harder think longer. This doesn't work. Turn Followers into Leaders - In a complex world there is no need for followers. Followers need instruction, guidance, discipline applied, and are therefore expensive team members. Leaders on the other hand can turn chaos into order and to a set degree make their own choices. This is a far more effective way to manage a group as we head into the future of ever increasing complexity.


Witness Interconnectedness at all Levels - One major idiosyncrasy of complexity is the desire to oversimplify the interconnectedness of diverse  pieces of the puzzle. However, the  interconnectedness of the various pieces of the puzzle that is of vital importance when planning, organising and distributing resources. It is also of vital importance for the integrity of any decisions being made to understand their impact on the bigger picture. This all requires insight into the interconnectedness of all areas of life.

Clear any Brain Fog without Caffeine - Brain fog is an idiosyncrasy of leadership and an ever-increasing problem with growing complexity. Caffeine has become the antidote and many CEOs are addicted to coffee and tea and in some cases sugar in order to cope with brain fog. This creates a multitude of ancillary problems such as over eating, overexertion and depression. Choose Inspiration over Motivation - At the heart of leadership is the question of motivation; getting people to do what you want them to do. Of course this is a science of itself. Inspiration on the other hand is based on internal rewards. This is not so essential however it produces less desperation, less stress, more clarity and better decisions.

Find the Shortest Path Project Completions- With every project there is a long way and a short way. The long way which was quite acceptable in an environment where complexity was not high but total organisation was essential was the default. With increasing complexity that long way exposes the project to far more variables and keeps people in a heightened state of nervous adrenaline alert. So the long way has become even longer with increasing complexity. The short way means slowing down in order to speed up. Under these circumstances there are times when meetings need to be cancelled because the stakeholders are distracted, there are times when communication needs to stop, take a break become clear and restart. There are times when people are best to take time off, take a break,  clear their head and come back to work. The slow way has become the fast way.

Read Personal Signs Accurately - The human body is an amazing machine, it's like a book with all the essential wisdom we need. Interpreting that book is another story. It's all too easy to ignore the signs and use synthetic substitutes to keep ourselves going and then suffer the long-term consequences of poor decisions. A sore knee, and aching neck, sinusitis, back pain, constipation, breathing difficulties are all a part of this amazing book called the human body and its essential wisdom. Learning to read this book allows for early intervention and therefore reduced downtime, healthier recuperation and more sustainable productivity; in another language are happier life.

Turn Up Calm in the Midst of Complexity - People are attracted to calm. A leader who has become nervous, agitated, overworked, confused, stressed, irritable, frustrated, overworked, exhausted or any other symptom of lost control will lose the respect of their followers. It is easy to remain calm when all is calm around you. However, under pressure when things are not going as planned this is the true test of leadership. If the individual remains balanced, centred, calm then they are leading. In a complex world this ability to remain calm differentiates between the old school and the new School of leadership.

Use More Clever Ways to Think Smarter - I once presented a corporate training programme to a large group of business executives that didn't go according to plan. The idea of thinking smarter was warmly received especially when it came to creating more time off. However when we applied this principle to real-life situations it met with huge resistance especially from those who enjoyed fundamentalism and righteousness as their default thinking process. Thinking smarter really does require a change of mindset. Thinking smarter does not mean being right however it means finding the right decision. Sometimes these are in complete contradiction to each other.

Evolve instead of Change - Change is what happens when we forget to evolve. A tsunami is what happens when there was resistance to evolving and the back pressure just exploded.

Be In Control - Who is running your life? Who is the boss of you? What higher power do you look up to? What emotional flashpoints set you off? What are you afraid of? In a complex world this stuff has no place but under your control. Add the mix of emotional loss of control on these critical topics to the external pressures of work life and you've got the formula for disaster. Clear your dirty laundry and be ready for the day.
