Learning to Listen ... The secret to being heard
Close your eyes and focus on what you can hear without distraction of visual input. Try to identify the location of individual sounds in the background. Notice the variety, texture, and complexity of sounds. Then, cup your hands around your ears and use them to localize sounds (just as animals with large ears alter the shape and direction of their ears to locate sounds). Try cupping both hands around one ear and using your hands to focus the sounds. Next, move around in your environment and use solid objects as sound conductors (e.g., when you pass a big tree, put your head down next to it and notice what you can hear).
If you think while someone is speaking, you are not listening. However, you cannot, not think. (excuse double negative). Instead apply the GIVE principle. GIVE means you are in 100% body, mind and spirit listening mode. Or more exactly, you're turning up. GIVE means:
G=Gratitude; Appreciate the viewpoint this person is making - They'll feel it. (engages body)
I=Inspiration: be in this very moment in time receptive and open. (engages Mind)
V=Vision: link listening and what they are talking about to the successful manifestation of your vision (engages heart)
E=Enthusiasm: be keen to know more than they have to say. Be enthusiastic to ask questions and explore their idea and never counteract it without exploring it. (engages communication)
